Christianity is now almost 2,000 years old and over time, it has changed a lot. We will not have the time to study everything that happened in the history of the Church, but we can study the major moments in history when Christianity turned into new directions, especially if these turning points affect Christianity as we know it in Southern Africa today.
The class week is scheduled for 10-15 December. During this time, we will focus on such big and disruptive events as the Great Schism, the Reformation, and the Revivals. We will further look at the quiet and often unnoticed way in which Christianity has existed in Africa for two thousand years. We will ask the question, “What can we learn from this history for our churches in South Africa now?”
This course is intended for first-year students at ESSA, making it accessible to anyone without much background in theology. This makes it an excellent course to just sit in on and observe, even when you are not studying theology yourself.
